We could get into exactly what a bunion is and how they’re formed, but how about we just summarize, huh?

Your feet are a great way to get information: Am I standing on level ground or a hill?  Is it soft or hard?  Bumpy or flat?  Your feet inform how the rest of your body positions itself in order to stay upright and your eyes seeing as much as they can (to get the most food or stay away from predators back in the day).  So, the more contact your feet can have with the ground, the better.  If you lived your entire life barefoot, your feet would look something like this:

In this country, though, we have this nasty little habit called ‘shoes.’  When you wear shoes, especially of the pointy-toed variety… your toes can’t grab a whole lot of info.  In fact, they get very squished.  It’s as if they’re being buried alive in gorgeous coffins.  Yes, it’s very scary and very sad, even if those shoes are just sooo cute and make your legs look amazing.  And then, there’s a lot of jargon about sesamoid bones and ligaments and tendons and plantar fascia, which I find interesting, but is probably TMI and you get a bunion.  Eek!  Once you have a bunion, there’s no easy fix, unfortunately.

 

First of all, prevention.  Take your pointy-toed shoes off!!  Don’t get me wrong; I have and wear shoes.  I even wear pointy-toed heels once in a while.  But I’m barefoot whenever I can be (around the house, at work, and in the car, but that’s illegal, so don’t tell anyone).  And I have those funny looking ‘toe-shoes’ that I wear all summer long, and when I run (on a treadmill or a path) or when I hike.  This is what I advise for you as well.  If you can’t be barefoot at work, try to get wide shoes with as little heel as possible.  Try to feel the ground as much as possible.  Wiggle those toes when you get a chance.  Spread them out while you’re lying in bed.   Stretch them wide!

Other options include surgery, Rolfing, and spacers, among other things.  The least intrusive is simply wearing a spacer between your toes.  I’m sure you can buy fancy spacers, but you could also use a small piece of foam or a wad of toilet paper between your first and second toes.  Rolfing can help restructure your feet, but it’s a long, slow process that is often painful.  Just being honest here.  Surgery, from what I hear, is painful and a long healing process as well.  So, yeah, I’d be happy to help, if you really want to work on fixing that bunion.  But if possible, it’s better to avoid getting one in the first place.

Well, let me tell you, I work with people of all ages.  I love working with children.  To date, the youngest person I’ve worked with was three weeks old.  Birth is a pretty traumatic experience and usually there’s some residual holding patterns that a kid can get stuck with if they’re not addressed.  In older children, I’ve worked with general posture, back pain, ADD, sleep patterns, headaches and migraines, and self confidence issues.  It’s fun for me to work with kids for a lot of reasons, but one of the main ones is that their tissues respond so quickly.  They have patterns that have only been held for a few years, instead of 20 or 40, and those patterns are quick to unravel with a little input.

On the other end of the spectrum, my oldest client so far was 87.  I enjoy working with the elderly as well, but you have to understand that scoliosis in an 87-year-old is a very different issue than scoliosis in a 12-year-old.  Treatment for older people is generally going to take longer, both in session length and number.  And reversing an 87-year-old pattern completely is nearly impossible, although there’s a lot that can be done by way of pain management and damage control.

So now you know.  If you’re alive, I’ll work with you.  I’m not an ageist, after all.

I get this question all the time.  And the thing is, it depends on you.  That’s the beauty of this whole Rolfing thing; it’s customized to you, special one.

First, listen to your body.  Your bod’s been taking care of you as best it can for as long as you’ve been alive.  So pay attention to what it has to say.  If you’re feeling off balance, ungrounded, or just a little wonky, it’s probably time for a tune up.  If you’re in pain, your body is sending you a very clear signal that it needs something.  Maybe a glass of water and a snack is in order, maybe a trip to your local ER, or maybe a trip to your favorite Rolfer’s office.  If you really listen to your body, I bet you’ll know what to do.

When in doubt, ask for advice.  If you’re still not sure, give me a call and ask what I think.  I’m not going to tell you to get Rolfed if I don’t think it will help.  Promise.

Are there general guidelines?
Don’t get too much bodywork at once.  I rarely recommend more than one Rolfing session per week.  Don’t try to be an overachiever and get a session every other day; you’ll probably do more damage than good.  This goes for other types of bodywork as well.  If you’re doing physical therapy twice a week, a massage once a week, and three chiropractic adjustments each week, along with acupuncture and Rolfing, it’s hard to tell what’s working and what’s not.  Also, your body never has time to integrate what’s going on and won’t be able to send you clear signals about what it needs next.

Don’t expect a big issue to be resolved in one session.  If you’ve had scoliosis for 20 years and haven’t done anything about it, don’t expect to be pain free after your first Rolfing session.  Big stuff like herniated discs, reconstructive surgery, and major car accidents generally take five to ten sessions to resolve while a strained psoas may only take one or two.  Have realistic expectations and make the commitment to your health and well being.

Maintenance is just as good for your body as it is for your car.  Life happens and it affects your body, like it or not.  For someone training for a marathon or pregnant, maintenance sessions should be every two to four weeks.  I like to get a session ever six weeks or so, and I’ve got a pretty physical job.  Some people are on the “call me when it hurts” maintenance plan and that’s fine.  Just keep in mind that maintenance is what happens AFTER we’ve gotten to a place of balance and ease; not what happens immediately after that skiing accident.

I don’t know about you, but I think my birthday should be a national holiday.

I’ve got a big birthday coming up.  I’m turning 30 on May 12th.  Yep, I’m a Taurus and I love my birthday.  In fact, I love my birthday month…and the month before my birthday, because my birthday is coming up.  Obviously, it’s a big deal for me.  And because it’s a big deal for me, I want to make it a big deal for you, and share the love.  So here’s the deal:

Since I’m turning 30 on the 12th, 12 lucky people will get $30 sessions.  Yup, you read that right.  I told you it was going to be a good special.

It works like this.  You call me (at 303-261-2568) today, at 1:00 pm.  IF you’re one of the first 12 people to talk to me, we schedule your next session and it costs you only 30 bucks.  Have your calendar handy, ’cause you have to schedule your session in May (and I’m going on a trip to NYC and Baltimore, so availability is slightly limited).  If you call and I don’t answer because I’m on the other line with someone who beat you to it, don’t leave a message.  Call back.  I won’t be checking messages until after all 12 sessions are scheduled.  If you already have an appointment scheduled for May and want it for $30, you still have to be one of the first 12 callers.  And if you’re caller 13 (or 14, or 15, etc.) you’ll have to pay the full $120 for your session.  Also, if you call before 1pm, I’m not going to answer.  Gotta keep the line clear for those that can play by the rules.  I’m a stickler for the rules.

Grand Opening Party!

My new office is just about finished and it’s time to celebrate (in addition to celebrating my birthday).  So, come one, come all to 662 Grant St. on Friday, May 20th between 5:30 and 7:30pm for some champagne and a few things to nibble on.  Stop by for a pre-dinner drink and introduce me to your spouse or that friend who wants to meet your big, scary Rolfer who’s been torturing you.  Can’t wait to see you there!  If you can’t make, just schedule your appointment and get the new office (almost) to yourself for over an hour!
