Spring is here! Warmer weather, more daylight, and all kinds of flowers poking their brave heads above the ground. It’s all so juicy!

So, I just realized that I’m going to be in Chicago for my 5-year anniversary of graduating from the Rolf Institute as a real, live Certified Rolfer. Which is sad, because I wanted to do something special to celebrate. But, hold up, it’s not actually sad at all because it just means that I’m going to do that something special earlier. Hooray!

Dr. Ida Rolf (who came up with Rolfing, in case you didn’t know and thought we Rolfers just got together and picked the worst possible name for what we do) used to struggle with the question, “What is Rolfing?” I’m sure you can relate, if you’ve tried to explain it to anyone, ever. Ida used to say that Rolfing was education, and in that vein, I’d like to give out some scholarships to celebrate 5 years doing this work, but I need your help.

Here’s how this is going to work. During the week of April 6th through April 12th, if you want, you come in and get a session. Then, whoever you want to receive a scholarship comes in the following week, April 13th through the 20th, for free, as long as I’ve never seen them (as a client) before. So, if there’s that person in your life, be it a spouse, a child, a coworker, a friend, a parent, a neighbor, a lover, that you’ve been trying, desperately, to convince to come get Rolfed, this is your (and their) chance. You get a session, they get a session. Total cost: one session. I don’t even care if you two work it out and split the cost of the first session. Just how generous you want to be is up to you. But you need to come in that first week and give me the name of the person you’re gifting the scholarship session to for the second week. Capisci? Let’s educate (Rolf) the masses!

Okay, next order of business: Music. To all of you who sent me suggestions or brought me CDs, thank you so much! I finally have a new playlist and I’m so excited to share it with you next time you’re in. If you still have more suggestions, but never got around to letting me know, feel free to keep ‘em coming. It’s been such a joy being exposed to new music through you. Thank you!

Lastly, I wanna talk to all my Lafayette (and surrounding area) peeps. I left my practice in Lafayette a while back as I focused more on being in Denver and doing less driving in my life, and because of that, I no longer get to see some of you, which gives me a sad. Hopefully, you have found new and lovely and wonderful practitioners to take care of your bodywork needs. However, if you haven’t, I have fantastic news! My friend, Dave Sheldon, who I’ve mentioned before, is now practicing Rolfing and SourcePoint Therapy in Lafayette, and I promise you, he is lovely and wonderful (though not new, as he has more experience than I do, by far). And I just googled his office location and it’s a whopping 1.2 miles from my old office (or 4 minutes by car). Dave is my Rolfer, and I can give no higher praise than that, but he also works in a way that is remarkably similar to the way I work, so if you’re missing my particular brand of magic, Dave is as close as it gets, without the drive to Denver. So please, check him out if you’re so inclined.

Hey there!  So, it’s been a whirlwind of a ten days or so since I sent out that email about snakey sessions.

Thank you.  Really.  So much.  Like, a lot.  And then some more.  Thank you for all of your support.  So many of you wrote me kind words.  So many of you signed up for snakey sessions and came in with open minds.  I am so grateful.  I have the best clients.  Really.  Thank you.

That being said, I wanted to clarify a couple of things.

-No, I don’t have any actual snakes in the room with me.  So for those of you who are worried about that, you can exhale now.  I’m sorry I wasn’t clear on that in the first place.  I don’t even know if it’s legal to own a king cobra, but I certainly don’t have one in my possession.

-The pricing on all this got messy fast.  So basically it’s on a donation basis from here on out.  At least until we’re done with all 39 sessions.  $0 to $60.  I’m just grateful that people are showing up for me to practice with.

-I would love to have people come back for second and third snakey sessions, if they want to.  I’d love to hear your impressions of how this thing is progressing, if at all.  I just ask that you finish your first before signing up for the second.  Make sure it’s something you’re into before committing to a time someone else might want.

-Along the same lines, I’ve had some issues with people not showing up for sessions.  I know, they’re practice sessions.  I get that.  But I’m putting in the same amount of effort, care, and respect that I always put into my sessions.  I’m blocking out time and making sure I’m prepared mentally and physically to do the best work I can.  When you don’t show up, well, it makes me sad.  And frustrated.  So please, if you schedule a session, even a practice snakey session, show up for it.  Or at least call me to tell me you won’t be coming so I can head out to that barbeque I’m missing, instead of sitting in my office waiting for someone who’s not planning on being there.

-Snakey sessions are taking anywhere from 45 to 90 minutes, it seems.  I’m going to keep it at 2 hours so that I don’t feel rushed, but there it is.

-I’m thinking about putting together a survey or a questionnaire of some sort to see what you think of these snakey sessions, so be on the lookout for that.  In the meantime, if you’ve had a session and have any sort of feedback to share, I’d love to hear your thoughts.

-As of this moment, I’ve done 17 snakey sessions (with another 6 scheduled in the next couple weeks).  I feel like I’ve learned a lot.  I’ve come a long way.  And yet, there’s still a lot to be done.  Many more snakey sessions to be done before that magic 39 is reached.  So if you or anyone else you know wants to help me out with this project, I’d love to have you come in.

Lastly, I have to announce that this will be my last month practicing in Lafayette.  I’ve been extra conscious of where I’m investing my energy lately and I just can’t justify the drive up north every week.  I am so appreciative of every client I’ve worked with up there.  And that was my first office as I came out of Rolfing school, so it will always hold a special place in my heart.  But the time has come for my practice to be just in Denver.  Again, a big thank you to each and every person I’ve worked with in Lafayette over the last 3+ years.

That’s all I’ve got for you for now.  Thank you, thank you for your support as I experiment with this new energy in my life!

Happy Valentine’s Day to you!  I’ve said it before.  I’ll say it a million times.  I have the best clients in the world.  Really.  The Best.  And you’re one of them!  I am so, so, so grateful for the opportunity to know you and to work with you.  And, for the opportunity to rub it in my Rolfer friends’ faces that I have better clients than them.  Pretty grateful for that.  Not gonna lie.

The thing is, I love Rolfing and SourcePoint Therapy so much, that I’d be doing it on stray dogs in the street if I didn’t have any clients.   I do it because I love it.  Because I feel like I was made to do this work.  When I finally found this stuff, it was like the clouds parted, and the sun was streaming down, and the angels in heaven started singing and playing their cute little harps.  I just knew this was it.  It was the first time I’d ever thought I could do one thing for the rest of my life without getting bored.  And so far, so good.  I have no plans to retire.  Ever.  I never want to stop.  I do it for love, just like Sara Bareilles.

But it helps to have clients.  While Rolfing my own hands and feet and stray dogs is great (not really), I prefer to have clients to work with.  And being blessed with the most amazingest, awesomest clients in the world doesn’t hurt, either.  It’s just that I learn so much from you, every time we work together.  My understanding of this work, the human body, energy systems, emotions, and myself deepens with every session.  So thank you, thank you, for providing me with such a gift.  You truly are amazing.  One of my mentors in Rolfing school once said, “you don’t have to like your clients, but you do have to love them.”  And lucky me, I get to do both, without even trying!  You are wonderful!  And it’s such a joy, such a delight, to work with you.  I look forward to seeing you every time you come in!!  I get to wake up excited to go to “work,” if you can even call it that!

Demo Day (in Lafayette) is today!  And Demo Day (in Denver) is tomorrow!  Thank you, Colorado peeps, for all your help in getting the word out to make them successful!

Chicagoans:
The next appointments I have available in Chicago are on Tuesday, March 27th, and Monday through Wednesday, April 9th through 11th.  Let me know if you want one!

1. Where are you located? Why? Because if you have to spend 90 minutes getting to your 90 minute appointments, you’re less likely to go. Just like a gym membership, Rolfing is more effective the more often you utilize it. While I know one person who took the bus 3 hours each way to his Rolfing appointments and went through the entire 10-series, most of us just aren’t that dedicated.

My A: My main office is at 662 Grant, on the second floor, in Denver, CO. I have a secondary office at 489 US. Hwy 287, inside the Baseline Chiropractic office in Lafayette, CO. I occasionally visit Chicago and when I do, I practice out of the Relaxation Station at 10655 S. Hale.

2. How much do you charge? Why? Because if you can’t afford it, there’s no reason asking any other questions. The average price range for Rolfing sessions varies widely by location, from $100 to $400. Again, Rolfing is more effective with more sessions, so plan for at least 3 visits. Rolfing is almost never covered by insurance.

My A: My fee is $120 per session. Children 10 and under are free. I don’t bill insurance companies, but am happy to provide treatment notes and receipts if this is an avenue you’d like to pursue.

3. What forms of payment do you take? Why? Because most Rolfers only accept cash and checks. You don’t want to show up with plastic and feel sheepish.

My A: I accept cash, checks, Visa, Mastercard, and Discover.

4. What is your style of working? Why? To know who’s a great or terrible fit for you and your body. You can learn a lot about a Rolfer by asking this question. -A “traditional” or “old school” Rolfer will tend to be very rough. Ida Rolf was not gentle, nor were the Rolfers who trained with her. This may be a good fit if you like super deep pressure, or are a masochist. -Someone who blends massage and Rolfing may used fascial release techniques in a traditional massage. This may be a good fit if you enjoy massage, but want a taste of Rolfing as well. -A movement practitioner is someone who’s completed an extra training to become movement certified. Movement work can be very powerful, but requires a lot of participation and involvement from the client. Not for those who are planning to sleep through their sessions. -Cranial-sacral work is very subtle, using very light pressure but with huge potential for change. Perfect for those afraid of “old school” Rolfing and awful for those who want an elbow in their quads.

My A: I use a broad spectrum of touch to get the maximum change with the minimum discomfort. While moments may be intense, most people find my work to be relaxing and enjoyable. I combine SourcePoint Therapy and Rolfing in a customized blend to fit your body and your needs. If you don’t want any energy work, or any hands-on work, I’m probably not the right fit for you as I have a hard time eliminating either completely. Oh, and you get to keep your clothes on during your session.

5. Do I need to do the 10-series? Why? Whether or not you want to receive the 10-series, you should know what your Rolfer has planned for you before you walk in the door.

My A: No; how many sessions you do is up to you. I do offer the traditional Rolfing 10­series if that’s the route you’d like to pursue, but it’s not expected. I’m happy to do targeted, customized sessions instead of following ‘the recipe.’

6. Where did you do your training? Why? Because Rolfers who trained in Brazil will have more of a movement emphasis in their work than people trained in the US or Germany. People who trained at the Guild for Structural Integration will be more traditional than people trained at the Rolf Institute®. Hellerworkers tend to integrate more talk therapy into their Structural Integration sessions. Neither Guild practitioners nor Hellerwork practitioners are considered “Rolfers” but are Structural Integrators.

My A: I trained at the Rolf Institute in Boulder, CO and have done all my continuing education there as well, except for one class in Santa Fe, NM.

7. How long have you been in practice? Why? This one’s a catch-22. Rolfers who have been in practice a long time obviously have more experience, which is a good thing. But there’s been a lot of research and new technique development in the 40 years that Rolfing’s been around. A Rolfer who hasn’t stayed on top of their continuing education may be working in an outdated way. Then again, a newer Rolfer may not have the experience needed to handle extremely complicated issues. And some people are just ‘naturals’ at Rolfing, whether they’re new or old. So it’s kind of a toss up, but it’s still good to know.

My A: I’m in my second year of practice.
