Hey there SassyPants,

It’s (apparently) been 8 1/2 months since I wrote a blog post.  I guess I didn’t have much to say.  But now I DO have something to say.  Two things, in fact.  No, make that three.  Good things come in trios, as they say.

First and foremost, I’m moving to a new office.  For the second time in my almost-8-year career, the space I’m currently renting will soon be torn down and turned into a luxury apartment building.  Love you, Denver!  And so, it is with great excitement that I announce Monday, January 29th will be the last day I see clients at 701 S. Logan and Wednesday January 31st will be the first day I see clients at 1221 S. Clarkson (suite 122).  I’ll be sending out reminders of the new location for the first month or so, but after that, you’re on your own.  The new building is around the corner from Whole Foods for all your pre- and post-Rolfing snacking needs and is still very accessible and in the West Wash Park neighborhood.  The only trick is parking, in that there are about 8 spots directly in front of the building on Clarkson which is designated as 2-hour parking.  The surrounding blocks are all 1-hour parking (which is a bit short for a Rolfing session).  However, exactly one block north, on Mississippi, parking is unlimited (except for the once a month street sweeping days).  So here’s your chance to get a little more movement in your life and spend just a minute or two more outside by parking a block away!  I really am excited about this new space and I’m looking forward to sharing it with you.  I’m also looking for a few other therapists to share the space with, as there are two treatment rooms and I’ll only be using one (and even that one I don’t use 24/7).  So, if you are a, or know any massage therapists, Rolfers, Reiki practitioners, acupuncturists, counselors, psychologists, or other healers who could use some full or part-time office space, please let me know!

Secondly, my dear friend and personal Rolfer, Dave Sheldon is organizing and co-teaching a SourcePoint Therapy module 1 class in Boulder at the Rolf Institute April 6th-8th.  This class is open to the public and you need absolutely no experience as a bodyworker or in any particular field to participate.  I’ll be attending the class myself for a review and would love to see you there as well.  If you’ve ever had any interest in exploring SourcePoint Therapy for your own personal use (or to use on your friends or kids or pets or unsuspecting strangers), this is a great opportunity to check it out.  You’ll learn a lot of the basics taught by the creators of SourcePoint, Bob Shrei and Donna Thomson.  Early registration is $550; after February 23rd it goes up to $600.  You can contact Dave directly at dave@davesheldon.com to register and more information about SourcePoint Therapy can be found at sourcepointtherapy.com.

Lastly, I wanted to let everyone know that I’ll be taking off 6 weeks this summer to thru hike the Colorado Trail (unless the whole state is on fire because we haven’t had any snow or rain).  My exact date of departure is yet to be determined, but will probably be around the first of July. I bring this up now just in case you want to do a 10-series this year.  Since a 10-series takes a minimum of 10 weeks to complete, and more commonly takes 20-30 weeks to complete, and because there are only 24-25 weeks before I head out, and because it’s really not ideal to take a 6-week break in the middle of your 10-series (but it won’t kill you either, let’s not be overdramatic here), it’d be ideal for you to either start your 10-series pretty soon, and get on a regular schedule, or wait until I get back, in mid-August to start.  If, however, you have already done the 10-series, or have no interest in the 10-series, then proceed as usual and don’t even worry about the fact that I’ll be gone for 6 weeks.  It’s half a year away!

The only thing I do every day is brush my teeth.  I mean, technically, that’s not true, of course, because I open my eyes every day and I breathe every day and I eat every day and I drink water every day.   But you know what I mean.  The only helpful habit I’ve cultivated (that’s not demanded for life) is brushing my teeth every day.  Some people do yoga every day.  Some people meditate every day.  Some people take a multivitamin every day.  I brush my teeth, and that’s it.

Not that I haven’t tried to do other things daily.  I’ve gone through (relatively short) periods where I meditated every day.  I’ve taken different supplements for weeks or months at a time.  I like yoga.  But brushing my teeth is the only thing I do every, single, day.  So, when it is suggested to me, or I suggest to myself, that I start a new something, every day, my response, both to myself and to others, is usually something along the lines of, why bother?  How many bottles of half-finished supplements have I thrown out because after 3 weeks of diligent supplementing, I’ve completely forgotten about them until they expired?  How many yoga/gym/class memberships have I purchased for a great month of sweating to be followed by a few months of guilt and eventual cancellation?  Which means that I often don’t do things that I know are good for me.  Things that would make my life better.  The knowledge that I’m probably not going to be able to keep this up every day, forever, stops me from even starting.

But then I went to the dentist.  For the first time in 4 years.  Don’t judge me.  And the dentist said I needed to start flossing.  (I know, I know, I should’ve started flossing a long time ago.  But I didn’t.  Probably because I tried to to it every day, failed, and gave up.)  As it stands, I floss when I’m bored, standing in the bathroom with the medicine cabinet open, and the floss catches my eye.  As you can imagine, this is about twice a year.  Or, not as often as I should be flossing.  The dentist had the audacity to suggest that I should floss every day.  Which is approximately 363 times more per year than I’m currently flossing.  Naturally, I thought to myself, “That’s not going to happen.”  Clearly, my dentist hadn’t gotten the memo about me only doing one thing every day.  But then, something strange happened.  I went home, and the next day, I flossed.  And then, about a week later, I flossed again.  And then a week after that, I flossed again.

And then I felt silly.  Why even bother flossing once a week?  And then, I thought, “Wait a minute.  What if it’s not silly?”  I mean, flossing once a week has to be better than flossing twice a year, right?  I mean, it’s 26 times better than flossing twice a year!  And, if I’m 34 (and a half) now, and I live to be 100, I could end up flossing 3,275 times more in the next 65 and half years than I would if I just stuck with my regular schedule of twice a year.  That seems to me like a pretty significant improvement.  So maybe it’s not so silly.

And who knows?  Every now and again, I might get the urge to floss twice in a week.  Or three times.  Maybe next year, or in 2020, I could commit to flossing every other day.  Which might not be enough to make my dentist happy, but it’s a helluva lot better than twice a year.

As you may have gleaned by now, I’m not one for new year’s resolutions.  Not that I have any problem with you having them.  By all means, go right ahead.  They’re just not for me.  But, that being said, I do have things I’d like to work on this year.  And I’ve decided to try applying my new flossing approach to them.

For example, I’m trying to sit less, and stand and move more.  And instead of saying, “I will only stand while I write emails and check facebook; never again shall I sit!”  I’ve put my laptop up on a pile of books so that it makes more sense to stand than to sit.  Sure, I can and do take my laptop to the couch when I want to.  But now it’s more effort to sit than to stand, so through my own laziness, I’m standing more than I was before.  I’ve also switched to walking to work more than driving or riding my bike.  I’d love to say that I only walk to work and that I never drive.  But I drove to work on Friday and that doesn’t mean I’m a failure.  I’m still standing and walking more than I was before.  And I count that as a win.

I’ve gotten really excited about this idea of little changes over long periods of time adding up to big differences in the end.  And letting go of the idea that a habit is only good if I do it every single day.  It just makes me happy to come to terms with teeth brushing being my only every-day-habit.  I don’t have to do push-ups every day.  I don’t have to eat kale instead of cheese burgers for the rest of my life.  I don’t have to meditate for an hour a day, every day.  Doing 5 push-ups this week is better than no push-ups.  Even if I swap kale for a cheese burger once this year, it’s a step in the right direction.  And 2 minutes of meditation are better than zero minutes of meditation.

So that’s what I’m going with.  Baby steps.  And no beating myself up when I don’t floss.  Compassion always, even (especially) for myself.

I’m coming up on 5 years as a Rolfer (time flies, ya know?)! It’s been such a wonderful ride. And whether you were here at the start, or just got on this train recently, I am so, so grateful to have you in my practice. I have the best clients. Period.

And now, I’m asking for a favor. I’ve been listening to the same “Rolfing Mix” of music for almost 5 years. I love my mix. There’s great stuff on there. And, it’s time for a change. So I’m turning to you for suggestions. What would you love to get Rolfed to? What puts you in that perfect Rolfing mood? You know, the mood for relaxed healing, but not sleeping? The music that’s interesting without being jarring or offensive? I’d love to hear your suggestions of artists, albums, or songs that you think would be a great fit. I’m excited about what I’ve got so far, but I need your creative genius to make this the best mix I possibly can.

Oh my gosh, SassyPants!  I have a new office!  I don’t know if you can tell, but I’m really excited about this!  So, my new office is at 701 S. Logan (suite 110).  Just about a mile and a half south of my current office, which is hopefully not too big a change for you.  It’s on the southwest corner of Logan and Exposition.  There’s plenty of parking (yay!), it’s on the main floor, with not one single stair (double yay!), and it’s got a lot more elbow room (hip, hip, hooray!).  Also, from what I can tell, it’ll be a lot quieter in this building than in my last, with less people tromping up and down the stairs or making phone calls right outside the door (yeehaw!).
I’ll be starting there Wednesday, September 17th, and with the new space will come slightly different hours of availability.  I’ll still be working full days on Sundays, Mondays, and Wednesdays, so that much will stay the same.  I might also have a half-day available on Fridays or Saturdays but those details are yet to be hammered out.  Regardless, if you book a session with me on or after the 17th of September, it will be at the new location.  I hope you like it as much as I do!  And if you have a soft-spot for my current office, be sure to get yourself scheduled in the next month to say goodbye to it!

Well, it’s clearly summertime.  Between seeing your lovely face at my office, backpacking, weddings, volleyball tournaments, long runs, visits from out-of-towners, and just the general fun of summer, I’ve barely had time to brush my teeth.  Just kidding.  I love brushing my teeth.  But seriously, what a whirlwind.  There’s been so much going on and so much I’ve wanted to write about, so here we go.

First, a very belated, but very heartfelt THANK YOU to everyone who participated in Pay What You Want Week back in April.  As usual, it was an absolute blast.  I can’t think of a better way to celebrate my birthday.  I got to meet so many new people, and see so many others I hadn’t seen in a while.  I have The Best clients.  Thank you for that.

Next, I’m sad to announce that I’ll be moving to a new office location soon.  The building I’m currently in has been sold, so I’ll be out by the end of September.  I’m looking at several options nearby and I’ll keep you posted with changes as I know more.  If anyone has a great space they know about, be sure to get me the deets!

Happy New Year, SassyPants! I hope your holidays were lovely and just what you wanted them to be. I spent all of Christmas day in my pajamas, so it was a success in my book.

So this is the time of year when everyone’s making resolutions and starting fitness programs and cutting calories and whatnot. More power too ‘em. Generally speaking I’m not a fan of New Year’s resolutions. I think January’s a crappy time to start new projects since this time of year is all about rest, introspection, and slow germination. Spring is the time for new projects and ambitious goals. On the other hand, I’ve had a strange feeling lately. It’s as if I know, deep in my bones, that the habits I form now, the patterns I create now, are the ones that are going to stick with me for the rest of my life. This isn’t the time to plant new seeds. But it is the time to start looking through the seed catalogs to pick out what I will plant in March, April, and May.

It feels like now is the time for me to decide what I want to grow in my life. Instead of “Lose 20 pounds by May 1st,” I’d rather cultivate a healthy, active lifestyle. I love biscuits and gravy. But do I want to be the sort of person who eats biscuits and gravy for breakfast every day? Or would I rather be the sort of person who enjoys them a few times a year, as a treat? ‘Cause let me tell you, I LOVE me some biscuits and gravy, but I never get up after a plate of them feeling amazing. And I want to feel amazing pretty much every day. So I need to figure out what I can do to feel amazing pretty much every day. This is what I came up with. My list of things I’d like to cultivate; this month, this year, this lifetime.

-A positive outlook
-Spontaneous dancing (including, but not limited too: dance-walking, dance-cooking, dance-cleaning, and general booty-shaking)
-Connecting with family
-Expecting abundance
-Healthy, delicious home-cooked meals
-Lots of laughter
-An active life
-Vitamin D supplements every winter
-Generosity
-Hugs and snuggles
-Loving the animals in my life
-Random acts of kindness
-Gigantic, overwhelming love
-Smiling at strangers
-Quality time spent with quality people
-Patience
-Lots of kissing
-Dreaming big
-Gratitude
-Reading a lot
-Growing plants, including my food
-Embracing down-time
-Making things from scratch
-Being enough, right now, in this moment
-Quality over quantity in every aspect of my life
-Beautiful, sacred spaces
-Time spent outdoors
-Getting enough sleep every single night
-Listening: to my body, to my intuition, to the earth, and to my friends
-Going deeper; getting to the heart of it
-Stretching: physically, mentally, emotionally

I’m hosting a Demo Day!

What is a Demo Day? It’s a day full of demonstrations, of course!  I tried this about a month ago with some close friends and family and it went so well that I’m going to try and make it a regular thing.  Let me tell you how it works.  People come in to my office and get a 20-minute taster session for $10.  It’s like the Taste of Colorado, but without the face painting, or the bands, or the crowds, or the food…okay, it’s nothing like the Taste of Colorado.  But for those who have never experienced what I do, it’s a great way to sample it, without committing to a 90-minute session.  They get a little Rolfing, a little SourcePoint, a little Theresa-love and then go on their merry way.

Who can participate in Demo Day?  Anyone who’s never been a client of mine is welcome to participate in Demo Day.  Friends, enemies, your mom, your newborn (although their taste would be free), your favorite guy at the pizza place down the block, as long as they’re new to my office.

When is Demo Day?  Wednesday, August 31st (of this year, not 2012, in case you were confused); a week from tomorrow.  There are 19 spots total, and like I said, last time it was a huge hit (all spots were taken).

Where is Demo Day?  At my Denver office, 662 Grant St., on the second floor.
